Knee replacement as the first operation for an elderly with complex knee fracture

  • It is a convention that fractures around the knee are treated with fixing them with plates and screws. In elderly persons such treatment often leads to failures as their fractures are in multiple pieces, bones are brittle and the fixation devices (screws and bolts) do not hold well. It is common that such patients land up with failure of fixation and need repeated operations. In this elderly lady, we decided to replace the knee directly, as that is bypassing all the problems of natural healing of the fracture.
